Kenyan McDuffie won a special election on Tuesday evening in Washington, D.C. to fill the vacant seat left by former Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr., who was convicted of embezzling $350,000 in taxpayer dollars earlier in May. With all precincts reporting, McDuffie, a Democrat, won with 4,085 votes while his contender, Delano Hunter, also a Democrat, came in second with 1,850 votes. There were 12 candidates on the ballot.

McDuffie will serve the remainder of Thomas’ term, which ends in 2014. He won’t be sworn into office until the D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics certifies the results. The board is scheduled to certify the results on May 30.
