Virginia bill would increase speed for reckless driving charges

A new bill introduced in Virginia would allow drivers to go faster before triggering reckless driving charges. According to the current law, drivers can be charged with the criminal offense of reckless driving if they are caught speeding above 80 miles per hour. The bill would raise that threshold to more than 85 miles per hour. Delegate Jeff Campbell stated that because speed limits on most rural interstates have been increased in recent years from 65 to 70, the reckless driving threshold should increase as well. Both the state police and Nationwide Insurance oppose the change. The bill is currently being passed around at the full House Transportation Committee.
