In new progress reports that replace the standards set by 2002’s No Child Left Behind program, Virginia’s public schools showed increased literacy and mathematical scores. The directive of these new programs is to decrease gaps between high and low income students as well as addressing racial discrepancies in an effort to address specific needs of students throughout the state.
As a result of the findings from state-wide testing, some schools have been highlighted for improvement, and attention has been drawn to specific needs for math and literacy skills. The numbers of VA Schools to meet the new national standards increased since recent years, however efforts to achieve across the board excellence are still considered a priority for the state.
