The mother of the deceased University of Virginia lacrosse player, Yeardley Love, has filed a $30.5 million lawsuit against the former men’s lacrosse player convicted of murdering her 22-year-old daughter in 2010. The Daily Progress reported that Sharon Love filed a lawsuit on Thursday in Charlottesville Circuit Court against George Huguely V, saying he was responsible for the death of her daughter. Sharon Love, who lives in the suburbs of Maryland, is seeking $29.5 million in compensatory damages and $1 million in punitive damages. According to court documents, she alleges that Huguely “failed to use ordinary care, leading to an accident for which he was responsible that resulted in the injuries and death of Love.” Sharon Love’s lawsuit also said Huguely “acted with such indifference to Love that his conduct constituted an utter disregard of caution amounting to a complete neglect of safety for Love.”
The 24-year-old Chevy Chase, Md. native was convicted in February of murder in the second-degree and grand larceny for the 2010 death of Yeardley Love. A jury has recommended Huguely serve 26 years in prison. Huguely’s sentence is scheduled for August 30.
