In the first quarter, Amazon earned $130 million, or 28 cents per share, and delivered a billion packages to its customers. The earnings were a 35 percent decline from a year ago, but it was much better than the 7 cents per share projections from analysts polled by Thomas Reuters. Amazon’s revenue came in at $13.2 billion, just above the $12.9 billion analysts predicted. Amazon forecasted its sales between $11.9 billion and $13.3 billion for the second quarter, which is in line with analysts’ expectations. Analysts project about $12.8 billion.

Amazon expects its operating income for the current quarter will come in a range of a $40 million profit and a $260 million loss. Amazon CFO Tom Szkutak said, “Given the growth that we’re experiencing right now, we’re investing and we’re making sure we have the resources to do that.” Szkutak said the company plans to continue expanding.
