‘Teen Mom’ Amber Portwood checks into prison

MTV’s Teen Mom star Amber Portwood has started her five-year prison sentence at Indiana’s Rockville Correctional Facility. According to a spokesman for the state’s Department of Corrections, the 22-year-old will start her prison term with a two-week “diagnostic and evaluation period.” During this time, Portwood will only be allowed to receive mail. She will be able to see visitors once she has settled into her permanent placement.

On June 5, a judge reinstated the original five-year sentence against Portwood after she pulled out of a court-ordered drug rehabilitation program. The program, which stemmed from a December 2011 drug arrest, would have allowed her to avoid serving time. In an interview with ABC News, Portwood said that she was uncomfortable and depressed at the rehabilitation center. She decided that she’d rather “do my time and get it over with.” The reality star plans to take substance abuse classes offered by the prison. She also intends on getting her GED. Her three-year-old daughter Leah is under the custody of her father and Portwood’s on-again, off-again boyfriend, Gary Shirley.
