Myanmar’s Suu Kyi to run for Parliament

0

Opposition leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi confirmed her intent to run for a seat in Myanmar’s parliament. Her party hopes the decision will give the April elections legitimacy and historic significance. A victory could give the former political prisoner a voice in her country’s government.

Suu Kyi was under house arrest during the country’s November 2010 elections. Many members of the National League for Democracy Party boycotted the elections because she would not be allowed to participate. Suu Kyi’s decision to run for parliament now is a vote of confidence in Myanmar’s move toward government reforms.
