D.C. council special elections will likely be May 15

The special election to fill the seat displaced by D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. will likely occur May 15. Thomas pleaded guilty last week to embezzling more than $350,000 in government funds, and for filing false tax returns. Thomas announced his resignation, but has yet to submit his formal resignation letter, according to Board of Elections and Ethics spokesperson Alysoun McLaughlin.

Once the board receives the letter, they will officially declare the seat vacant, which will likely occur early next week. District law would then designate May 15 as the date of the special election. Whoever wins would serve the remainder of Thomas’ term through 2014.
