Egyptian government defends actions

The Egyptian government insisted their troops acted in self-defense and were not responsible for many of the 580 deaths which occurred on Wednesday after what reports are calling the bloodiest day in Egypt since the revolution two years ago. Ambassador Ashraf Elkholy, Egypt’s ambassador to Great Britain said, “What the Egyptian government did, and the police, is an obligation from any state towards its people, to defend its interests and to protect them.” He then added “And 48 days of occupying an area in Egypt, stopping civilians going to their homes or their businesses or their schools, is unaccepted in any community.”

A fight broke out in Cairo on Wednesday after Egyptian security forces tried to disperse protestors as they showed their support for recently disposed President Morsi. Along with 580 deaths, the Egyptian Health Ministry reported that over 4,000 people were injured. The protestors, members of the Muslim Brotherhood, claim the government intended to massacre the group. They said, “We will continue our sit-ins and demonstrations all over the country until democracy and the legitimate rule are restored in Egypt.”
