Norton petition Republicans for greater voting rights

0

D.C. leaders will make an attempt to appeal to the Republicans for greater voting rights. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton plans to take to the House floor in a last-ditch effort to win back the District’s vote. She made it clear that the vote is tied to the people and not to the party in power. The District’s delegate currently votes in committees but not in the Committee of the Whole.

Norton was a careful factor in complimenting certain Republicans who were supportive or open to greater voting rights for the District. The District will have no choice but to rely on relationships with a Republican party whose beliefs are often conflicting with their own. The House and Senate are controlled by the Republicans, but Norton and Mayor Muriel Bowser both believe that the new power doesn’t have to preclude new rights for the District. Norton firmly believes that restoring the District’s vote would be in the best interest and keep with the American traditions.
