Over a dozen new automatic speed cameras will take effect Tuesday. The cameras were placed all around the District, from from Massachusetts Avenue in Northwest to Martin Luther King Avenue in Southeast. One camera, on Monroe Street near 18th Street Northeast, will target oversize trucks. For the next 30 days, a warning will be issued for speeders, then tickets will be administered. Driving 1 mph to 10 mph above the limit will be a $50 fine, 11 mph to 15 mph over is a $100 ticket, the ticket price increases every 5mph. While many drivers are against these cameras, father Rick Jones stated, “When you got kids, you got to be safe.”
