Washington National Cathedral hosted its first Muslim prayer service Friday morning. The cathedral has hosted interfaith services in the past, in addition to its main Episcopal services. Friday’s service was the first at the prominent church that invited Muslims to lead their own prayers there. South African Ambassador Ebrahim Rasool, who helped build the idea while planning the national memorial service for Nelson Mandela, called it “a dramatic moment in the world and in Muslim-Christian relations.”
