The District of Columbia will offer a heavily discounted rate for the GED test and certification starting next month. This discount will reduce the cost of the test from $120 to $15 is offered from the new partnership between D.C.’s Office of the State Superintendent of Education and the GED Testing Service. The test was recently overhauled to update its effectiveness in a modern economy and job market. Also, the Washington Post reports that 40 percent of ninth graders in the District will not graduate in four years, and about 62,000 adults do not have a high school diploma, nor have they passed the GED. Without a diploma, a person is at a much greater risk of poverty and incarceration. Also, even though some states have decided to use other certifications, the District will offer the GED certificate to people from those states, if they pass the test online through a D.C.-based center. The city is offering free practice tests through October 3, and the reduced rate will go into effect October 6.
