D.C. Councilman Thomas Jr. called to resign

D.C. Councilman Harry Thomas Jr. is in negotiations with the U.S. Attorney’s office to resign as part of a plea agreement. Thomas is alleged to have appropriated more than $300,000 in city funds for personal use. The city funds were to go towards youth services. On Dec. 2, FBI and IRS agents raided Thomas’ home, seizing several items including a Chevy Tahoe, a motorcycle and several plastic bags and manila envelopes.

Thomas agreed in a civil suit to pay back the money he was accused of taking. After Thomas’ seat is declared vacant, a special election will be held within 114 days. The election would be open to all eligible voters from Ward 5.
