‘Corpse flower’ blooms next to US Capitol

The rainforest plant known as the corpse flower for its smell of rotting flesh began to bloom Sunday afternoon.

Officially known as titan arum, the flower bloomed at the U.S. Botanic Garden next to the Capitol. Experts have been anticipating the bloom for more than a week and have extended the garden’s hours for visitors.

The flower is expected to reach “peak smell” by Monday and remain in bloom for one to two days.

The flower is native to tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and was discovered in 1878.

Experts say the flower’s smell appeals to insects that are attracted to rotting flesh.
