Pharmacist loses license over drug dispensing

0

A Hanover County pharmacist has lost his state license for dispensing excessive amounts of controlled substances. According to Virginia Attorney General Mark R. Herring, the Board of Pharmacy not only revoked Douglas A. Harris’ license, but also ordered him to pay a $15,000 civil penalty as well. Herring also claims the board’s actions, which took place last week, stemmed from an investigation by the state and the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. They found that Harris’ pharmacy, Beaverdam Pharmacy, had filed 338 prescriptions for oxycodone, hydromorphone, and other controlled substances for 55 patients from Kentucky, Georgia, and Florida during 2012 and 2013. These prescriptions were written by physicians in Georgia and Florida who were also investigated and they either surrendered their licenses or their licenses were suspended for inappropriate prescribing of opioid medication.
