Power voice Mariah Carey has been selected as this year’s “BMI Icon.” The 42-year-old singer-songwriter will accept the award Sept. 7 at the BMI Urban Awards in Beverly Hills. Each year, one songwriter affiliated with the publishing rights organization is singled out as a BMI Icon for his or her “unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers.” Prior honorees have included James Brown, Little Richard, Al Green, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton and Snoop Dogg.

Carey, who is famous for hits like “We Belong Together,” “Hero” and “Always Be My Baby,” has had 18 No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. The New York Native wrote or co-wrote most of her signature hits.
