The Tony Awards proved to be a warmhearted event after Sunday night’s telecast. Inspiring speeches about the theater community took place as well as crazy antics on the part of Neil Patrick Harris.

A Tony award was presented to the most feel-good musical of the year, “Kinky Boots” and Cyndi Lauper won an award for best original score from the musical. Billy Porter also won best actor for his role as a jubilant drag queen. In winning best musical, “Kinky Boots” caused a slight upset as it trumped “Matilda the Musical” and the dysfunctional family satire “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike”.

Cicely Tyson, 88, created an emotional stir as she won best actress in the play “The Trip to Bountiful”. The actress received two standing ovations and told the audience that at her age she had “this burning desire to do just one more — one more great role. I didn’t want to be greedy. I just wanted one more.”
