Johnson & Johnson to pay $2.5 billion in hip-device settlement

Johnson & Johnson was hit with thousands of lawsuits by patients who underwent hip-replacements that let to injuries or more surgeries. The patients are claiming that Johnson & Johnson sold defective implants which caused the problems. Around 8,000 cases have been reported of people who had problems with the ball-and-socket hip implant, and the company took the product off the market in 2010.

On Tuesday, Johnson & Johnson agreed to a $2.5 billion settlement, which would give around $250,000 to each patient, and pay for the procedures of people who had their implant removed or replaced before August 31, 2013.

However, the settlement is not a response to all the lawsuits that the company is currently handling. “DePuy will continue to defend against remaining claims and believes its actions related to the ASR Hip System have been appropriate and responsible,” the company said. More than 90,000 bought the artificial hip, called the Articular Surface Replacement, and Johnson & Johnson recalled it in 2010.
