Yemeni leader poised to hand over power

Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh arrived in Saudi Arabia Wednesday with plans to sign a deal that could end his 33-year rule. The agreement would end the nine-month uprising that has shaken Yemen with violence. Tens of thousands of Yemeni people have protested Saleh’s rule, calling for democracy. The U.S. and other world powers have called for Saleh to find an end to the crisis.

Once Saleh signs the agreement, powers would be immediately transferred to Vice President Abdo Rabu Mansour Hadi. Saleh would leave office “within 90 days” of an agreement. He would remain in Saudi Arabia permanently after signing the deal, with the exchange of power granting him immunity from prosecution.
