Three American college students who were arrested in Cairo Monday were released Thursday, said a spokesman for the Egypt general prosecutor’s office. The students were arrested on suspicion of throwing Moltov cocktails during a protest against Egypt’s ruling military council. Derrik Sweeney, Gregory Porter and Luke Gates all come from different universities, and were in Cairo as part of a semester-long, study-abroad program.

Sweeney’s mother, Joy, said she was delighted by the news of her son’s release. Sweeney, 19, attends Georgetown University; Porter, 19, attends Drexel University; and Gates, 21, attends Indiana University. The three were attending the American University in Cairo when violent clashes erupted in Tahrir Square.
