Violence continues to erupt in Syria

With the Syrian government’s fierce crackdown, the death toll continues to rise on those protestors who continue to fight President Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Imad Ghalioun, a parliamentarian from the city of Homs said, “What is happening in Homs is a crisis, a ghost town full of horror. The humanitarian situation is dangerous…residents cannot move from (one) neighborhood to the other because of snipers that kill people.” According to opposition activist groups, there have been 14 reported deaths since Tuesday and the United Nations report 5,000 deaths since March of 2011.

Ghalioun reportedly says al-Assad’s regime will battle at all costs to dismantle the revolt seeking al-Assad’s resignation and democratic elections. Al-Assad refers to the anti-government protestors as “armed gangs.” In a message to the president, United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said, “I say again to the President Assad of Syria: Stop the violence. Stop killing your people. The path of repression is a dead end.”
