The interim Egyptian government arrested Muslim Brotherhood spiritual leader Mohamed Badie on Tuesday along with Safwat Hegazy, a preacher and supporter of the group. The two are a part of the approximately 100 members of the Muslim Brotherhood arrested on Tuesday. Badie was arrested at an apartment building during a raid in Cairo.

The group released a statement calling accusations against Badie as “trumped up.” The statement also said, “It is well-known that all the charges brought against the leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood and its affiliated political party, the Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) as well as the leaders of the Anti-Coup, Pro-Democracy National Alliance are implausible fabricated charges with no legally acceptable evidence.” A spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, Ahmed Arif, said that Badie’s arrest “is not the end of the group, which will remain in the hearts of millions of Egyptians.”
