More than 230 survivors were rescued from the sea after a Papau New Guinea ferry sank on Thursday with 350 people on board, reported by officials. The MV Rabaul Queen sank while traveling from Kimbe on the island of New Britain to the coastal city of Lae on the main island, reported by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority. The ferry capsized in rough seas and sank four hours later.

Carly Lusk, an Australian Maritime Safety Authority spokeswoman, reported that 238 survivors have been recovered and most of them are uninjured. The majority of the passengers were students and teachers in training. Due to rough waters, the search may be suspended until dawn on Friday. Captain Nurur Rahman said, “I’m always hopeful. People have survived up to two days in these waters.”
