Libya declares liberation in wake of Gadhafi death

Following the death of Moammar Gadhafi, Libya’s new leaders ushered a new era and declared the nation’s freedom Sunday. “Libyan lands have now been completely liberated,” said Abdul Hafiz Ghoga, vice chairman of Libya’s National Transitional Council. Streets formerly filled with fighting after eight months of struggle were packed with cheering crowds. The coming months will hold challenges as the nation builds its new government.

The National Transitional Council has said elections will be held within a period of eight months. They will first vote on a national Congress which will draft a constitution with parliamentary and presidential elections to follow. U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the strides Libya has made, saying “We look forward to working with the (NTC) and an empowered transitional government as they prepare for the country’s first free and fair elections.”
