Egyptians head to polls in historic vote

For the first time in Egypt’s history, citizens flocked to polling places to cast ballots on Monday. In the aftermath of rioting, hundreds waited in Cairo to vote for a first round that would decide members of Parliament. The lower house, once decided, will draft Egypt’s new constitution. “This is the first time in 55 years that I (can) vote,” said Sharif Shinawi, a 55-year-old businessman. “It was never in the history of Egypt, since Adam and Eve, that we’ve had this opportunity. I am willing to wait 10 hours, or until tomorrow morning if I have to, but I will vote.”

Protesters continued to call for Mubarak’s military replacements to step aside. Some cast their votes and then returned to show solidarity in Tahrir Square. At least 42 people have been killed in recent clashes, including at least 33 in Cairo. Around the world, 70 percent of Egyptians abroad voted at embassies, according to a Foreign Ministry official.
