Egypt suffers bloodiest day since revolution

Violence surged in Cairo, Egypt on Wednesday as a fight began between supporters of Egypt’s current government and supporters of deposed President Morsi. Egyptian security officials invaded two sit-ins created by Morsi’s supporters, destroying tents and leading away protestors. As the protestors fought back, the encampments became dangerous as tear gas, guns and bricks were used as weapons. At least 278 people were killed according to an Egyptian emergency official.

The violence continued into the next morning as Morsi supporters attacked hospitals, police stations and government buildings even though the country had a government-mandated curfew. Reporter Arwa Damon stated from Cairo, “I think what we’re seeing right now is just the beginning of what is promising to be a very, very long and bloody battle as the interim government and the security forces try to regain control of the streets”
