Politico has reported that the closing of borders between some West African countries due to the threat of Ebola will affect the world chocolate trade. Ivory Coast has closed its borders with Liberia and Guinea, affecting the migratory workforces needed for the upcoming harvest. Not only could this drop in workers affect supply, but could significantly raise the prices of raw cacao, as Ivory Coast is the world’s largest producer of the material. The World Cocoa Foundation has begun requesting donations from companies such as Nestlé and Mars to help the Red Cross and Caritas Internationalis initiatives to slow the spread of Ebola.
