Clinton meets with Suu Kyi in Myanmar

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton met with Nobel Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi, as part of a diplomatic visit to Myanmar. She delivered a letter from President Barack Obama, which thanked Suu Kyi “for the inspiration you provide all of us around the world who share the values of democracy, human rights, and justice.” Suu Kyi, who was held under house arrest until November of last year for her political ideals, has helped lead Myanmar’s democracy movement. She plans to run for parliament in upcoming elections.

Clinton’s visit to Myanmar is an indication that the two nations could forge a new relationship. Clinton met with Myanmar’s president, Thein Sein, on Thursday, and delivered a letter to him as well. Obama told Sein he was “encouraged” that Myanmar “has taken several encouraging steps on the path toward reform.” If reforms continue, the U.S. could send an ambassador to the country.
