Cain says critics engaged in ‘character assassination’

In spite of growing recent allegations, Republican nominee Herman Cain was defiant in the face of critics and accusers. “They have been trying to do a character assassination on me,” Cain said. “They are attacking my character, my reputation and my name in order to try and bring me down.” Cain acknowledged Wednesday that his fundraising had taken a hit, following a Monday statement from a woman who claimed she had been involved in a 13-year extramarital affair.

Cain said Tuesday that he was “reassessing” his campaign. He denied that this meant he would drop out, saying on his Twitter feed, “The definition of reassess is: To consider again, esp. while paying attention to new factors. Doesn’t sound like dropping out…” Cain said a final decision on his campaign would come within “the next few days.”
