Results of Egypt election expected soon

Results of Egypt’s parliamentary elections, the first since the fall of President Hosni Mubarak, could be announced as early as Thursday. Two Islamist parties, the Muslim Brotherhood and the Al Noor Salafi Muslim Party, have claimed victory, but officials have not yet revealed the results. Voting took place on Monday and Tuesday to decide on members for the lower house of Parliament, who would then draft a new constitution.

Some boycotted the election for fear of unfair voting. Illegal campaigning was also reported in some locations. In the city of Alexandria, there were reports of vote-buying. Upper house elections will run between January and March, with presidential elections scheduled for June. Military leaders have said they will hand over power at that point, but many Egyptians are skeptical.
