Alleged chemical attack occurs in Syria

Videos were posted online showing victims of an alleged chemical attack in Damascus. The videos show scenes of chaos with people carrying bodies, people on the floor, covered by sheets and people shouting “Stop lying to us! Stop lying! Where did all these children go? Where is this regime … that is killing us?” Syrian activists are reporting the videos show the government has been using chemical weapons. Activists have been attempting to remove President Bashar al-Assad since March 2011.

The allegations occurred after a group from the United Nations arrived in Syria to examine if any participants in the conflict are using chemical weapons. A spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said the Secretary was “shocked” by the reports. He released a statement which read, “The Secretary-General reiterates that any use of chemical weapons by any side under any circumstances would violate international humanitarian law.” According to the statement, the U.N. group is communicating with the Syrian government and will begin work on Monday.
