On Sunday, a 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck central Chile, leaving three people injured and prompting emergency officials to order an evacuation along parts of the coast. No major damage has been reported. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the earthquake had a depth of 21.6 miles (34.8 km) and hit 16 miles (27 km) north-northwest of Talca, which suffered a devastating 8.8 magnitude earthquake in 2010.

Authorities initially canceled an evacuation order they issued for parts of the coast, which was later reissued on Sunday evening as a preventative measure. A tsunami warning was not issued. Of the three people injured, one was in a traffic accident in the Biobio region, and two others sustained light injuries when a ceiling collapsed.
