58 dead in Afghanistan suicide bombings

Two suicide bombings early Tuesday killed 58 people and injured scores of others, in a mass-scale sectarian attack on Shiite worshippers unlike any the country has seen. The attacks took place on the Shiite holy day of Ashura, with one device detonated at a Shiite shrine in Kabul, and the other at a roundabout on a busy street. There was no claim of responsibility for the attacks, and the Taliban denied involvement.

Police official Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai condemned the attacks, which were detonated almost simultaneously. “The enemies tried to spread fear in this important holiday in the city,” Ahmadzai said. While there have been clashes between Shiites and Sunnis in the past, sectarian bombings occur more frequently in Iraq.
