34 killed in fighting between al-Qaida and Iraqi troops

Iraqi military tried to dislodge al-Qaida militants in Sunni-dominated Anbar providence Sunday. This led to unleashed airstrikes and besiegement of the regional capital. These attacks also lead to the death of 34 people, while a series of bombs in Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad killed 20 people.

22 soldiers and 12 civilians were killed in the attack Sunday along with unknown numbers of militants. 58 people were also wounded. Recent gains by the insurgents have been a blow to the Shiite—led government, while sectarian violence has escalated since the United States’ withdrawal.
