According to the Italian navy, at least 14 people died at sea after a ship carrying migrants sunk on Monday. The ship sank about 100 miles off the southern coast of Italy; as of now, the Italian coast guard has rescued at nearly 200 people that were on the vessel. Southern Italy is a hotspot for ships carrying illegal immigrants from Africa: The small Italian island of Lampedusa is recognized as one of the most popular destinations for ships carrying both legal and illegal migrants. Many of the ships are often unworthy of sea-travel, and news of ships sinking in this area has become quite a normalcy; the Italian military has rescued close to 2,000 migrants in only the past five days.
