Thousands of bicyclists in the Metro D.C. area are sharing the road with drivers on Friday as part of Bike to Work Day. Drivers will observe large groups of bicyclists around the region. Last year’s Bike to Work day attracted almost 11,000 bicyclists, and this year, more than 10,000 are expected to participate.

According to Bike to Work Day 2012, there will be 58 pit stops along the cyclists’ commute around the metro area. The pit stops offer food, entertainment, and prizes for cyclists. About 2.2 percent of residents in the District, or 6,404 people, bike to work daily, AAA Mid-Atlantic says, which sites information from the D.C. Bike Program. Washington, D.C. has 56 miles of bike trails, 50 miles of bike lanes, and 3 miles of cycle tracks. According to Walk Score, a site that rates the “bikeability” of neighborhoods on a scale of 1 to 100, D.C. is considered the sixth-most bikeable city in the nation, with Minneapolis at the top. Drivers and cyclists are urged to bike and drive carefully.
