Speed limits may be increased on several DC roads

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray has announced that along with reducing fines for speeding tickets in the city, speed limits on several roads may be increased. Drivers have long complained that the 40 mph posted speed limit on I-395 and the Southeast Southwest Freeway are too low. D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson recently said that the many speed cameras along those stretches of road are traps even for safe drivers. Because some D.C. roads receive federal funding, the proposed changes may have to be approved by congress. The D.C. Department of Transportation is expected to release information on speed limit changes as early as Friday.
