Washington, D.C. residents in Ward 5 will vote on Tuesday in a special election to fill the vacant seat left by former D.C. Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr., who is going to prison for 38 months after he was convicted of stealing $350,000 from taxpayers earlier in May.

Voting polls will open on Tuesday to decide who will replace the former D.C. Councilman. The ballot includes 12 candidates, consisting mostly of Democrats. The elected official will serve the remainder of Thomas’ term, which ends in 2014. Ward 5 residents are the only people permitted to vote. Residents who are not registered to vote may do so at the polls, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
