The D.C. fire chief is praising two Army sergeants who came to the aid of a man who was hit by a Metro bus near the National Mall.

According to The Washington Post, Sgts. John Russell and Brian Williams were jogging Wednesday morning when they helped the man. The man was bleeding from a broken leg and a gash on his forehead.

The sergeants served together in Afghanistan and helped treat trauma patients there.

Police are currently investigating the accident. A Metro spokesperson says the man jogged into the street against a traffic light when the bus hit him.

Fire Chief Kenneth Ellerbe praised the soldiers, saying the city is fortunate to have a “well-trained civilian population.”
