Smoke bomb thrown over White House gates

On Tuesday night, as hundreds of Occupy protestors stood outside the White House gates, a smoke bomb was thrown over the fence. Officials inside the White House were prohibited from exiting on Pennsylvania Avenue until the situation was under control. George Ogilvie, a U.S. Secret Service spokesman, said there were no arrests in the incident.

The protest was reported to be the largest Occupy protest to date, but fell short of expectation. A permit allowed 10,000 people to participate, however, Ogilvie reportedly said that there were about 1,000 to 1,500 protesters at one point. Occupiers remain in two public squares near the White House.
