Smithsonian food workers strike over wages

Workers from two Smithsonian eateries are committing a one-day strike demanding the federally funded museums to pay them a “living wage”.

The workers plan to protest on Thursday outside of the National Air and Space Museum and march to the Smithsonian Castle.

The workers are employed by McDonald’s Corporation and Restaurant Associates, which are in charge of the restaurants at the National Mall.

This strike is the latest in a string of protests from other workers in federally owned buildings. Workers are in the process of submitting a letter to Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough calling for higher wages and paid holidays. They reference the Smithsonian’s $30 million in profits.
