Metro D.C. schools rank high on top 1,000 list

More than two dozen Metro D.C. schools are on a new best high schools list, issued by Newsweek and The Daily Beast. Thomas Jefferson School for Science and Technology in Fairfax County ranked tenth out of the 2,300 schools across the country that answered a survey by The Daily Beast and Newsweek. The Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science in Kentucky came in first on the list, followed by The School for the Talented and Gifted Magnet in Dallas.

Twenty-six high schools in the Washington region made the top 1,000 list. George Mason High in Falls Church came in at number 45. Poolesville High in Montgomery County was the top Maryland school on the list at number 81. D.C. had two schools on the list, with Banneker High coming in at number 192. Thirteen other schools from Northern Virginia, eight from Montgomery County, and two from Howard County all made the list. The schools were ranked based on on-time graduation rates, percentage of graduates who went to college and Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and SAT test scores.
