Female pastor marries DC woman

A female pastor from a Detroit church stepped down Friday after revealing her marriage to another woman.

Bishop Allyson Nelson Abrams was the first female pastor at Zion Progress Baptist Church and resigned after marrying District of Columbia woman Diana Williams. The two were legally married in the state of Iowa.

Forty-three-year-old Abrams, who was previously married to a man, said she “didn’t want to split the church any further.”

Abrams was ordained in 2001 and Williams is a bishop emeritus at Washington’s Imani Temple African-America Catholic Congregation, which is separated from the Catholic Church.
