Embezzlement charge for head of former charter school

Monique Murdock, a DC woman who opened and directed the Nia Community Public Charter School, has been charged with embezzlement. The school was located in Ward 7, but was plagued with reports of possible financial mismanagement and poor academic performance, and eventually lost its charter in 2011. Now it has come to light that Ms. Murdock has been charged with stealing almost $30,000 from the school’s funds by writing checks to her foster daughter. The checks would be cashed through accounts made for the minor and then transferred back to Murdock.
