Obsolete law prohibiting unmarried couples from living together is repealed

An obsolete Virginia law that prohibits unmarried couples from living together was officially stricken from the law books on Monday. The statute, which refers to “lewd and lascivious cohabitation” dates back 136 years to 1877 when many Victorian-era reform minded groups sought to mend what they saw as society’s sins. Although it has not been enforced in years, the existence of such a law means that some one could try to use it. The Virginia Senate voted to repeal the outdated law after Sen. Adam Ebbin of Alexandria introduced the bill.
