Two days after the Washington Capitals were defeated by a diminished Sabres team, head coach Bruce Boudreau was fired. The Capitals lost 5-1, while the Sabres were without nine of their regular players. “The reason for the change was we weren’t winning, obviously, and this wasn’t a slump,” General Manager George McPhee said. “You can ride out slumps. This was simply a case of the players were no longer responding to Bruce.”
The loss marks the second in a row and the eighth in the past 11 games. For Boudreau’s replacement, the Capitals are looking to Dale Hunter. Hunter, 51, played for the Capitals previously from 1987-1999. He served as captain of the team from 1995-1999, hopes it is that experience that will help him get through to the players and bring them back on the same page.
