President Obama spoke Tuesday to world leaders at a special U.N. climate summit, calling for all countries to act in cutting carbon emissions and promising that the U.S. is and will be doing the same. He specifically called on China to participate, as well as including other developing countries. Obama was joined in speaking by China’s Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli, who said that country is ready to work with others and “shoulder its responsibilities.” Additionally, former vice president Al Gore and actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who is a U.N. “messenger of peace” on climate change urged action at the meeting convened by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon. Under the Obama administration, U.S. emissions have dropped to a 20-year-low, with simultaneous increases in solar and wind energy production. Obama reported that the White House will announce plans for further cuts and regulations early next year.
