Football players at Springbrook High School in Silver Spring were accidentally burned last week when a strong cleaning agent meant for walls and floors was used on their pads and helmets. After school officials suspected a player had a staph infection, orders were given to spray down the whole locker room with disinfectant. Complaints of burning were made by several players midway through a three-hour practice September 16, and many of them found that night that they had first- or second-degree burns that required medical attention. One student was hospitalized for three days after his burns were infected. Parents are reportedly furious and considering legal action against the school. Springbrook has replaced the pads and helmets. The game scheduled for Friday, September 19 was moved to Monday, September 22, calling up junior varsity players to make up gaps in the roster. The Springbrook Blue Devils lost to Sherwood 56-6.
