Senate proposes a deal to end the shutdown and avoid a default

On Wednesday, Senate leaders proposed a deal that would bring an end to the government shutdown, and prevent a possible U.S. default. The proposal is even gaining support from the GOP, and House Speaker John Boehner says he is urging Republicans to back the deal. “We fought the good fight; we just didn’t win,” Boehner said on a radio station in Ohio.

The deal will pass Senate Wednesday night, and then shortly after, the House will vote. Leaders will have to work quickly to ensure that the legislation is passed before the debt deadline arrives at the end of the night. Some are still concerned, though, that tea party Republicans will block the deal with the hope that they will get to see more changes made to Obamacare.

Boehner noted in a statement: “Blocking the bipartisan agreement reached today by the members of the Senate will not be a tactic for us. Our drive to stop the train wreck that is the president’s health care law will continue.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid commented that the agreement was achievable because “political adversaries put aside their differences,” and President Obama commended Senate leaders for reaching a compromise. Obama also urged Congress to act quickly on the agreement, saying: “As soon as possible is essentially the recommendation we have from here.”
